A via ferrata is a mountain route which is equipped with
fixed cables,
stemples, ladders and bridges. Their use allows otherwise isolated routes to be
reached in order to create
longer routes accessible to people with a wide range of
climbing abilities. Walkers and climbers can follow the via ferratas without
the need of extra ropes and belays, and without the risks
associated with unprotected scrambling and climbing. They are found in a
number of areas in the southern Alps: Tende, La Brigue, Peille, la
Colmiane, Puget Thénier.... The first via ferratas were built in the
Italian Dolomite Mountain region during the First World War, to help
the mountain infantry to overcome the rocky chains. |
